The Austrian 8 Florins Restrike is your chance at getting a piece of history. The Austro-Hungarian empire grew to be one of the largest empires in Europe spanning across Central and Eastern Europe from 1867 to 1918. In 1892, the Austrian-Hungarian empire adopted the gold standard and developed a coin based on the French Franc.

This listing is a restrike of the original gold coin by the Austrian Mint. Each coin will use the 1892 date mark and feature a depiction of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the longest-reigning emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After his death, the empire quickly diminished as World War I caused irreparable damage to the empire and the rest of the Central Powers. The restrike contains 90% gold and 10% copper and will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

On the obverse of the coin, Emperor Franz Joseph I is featured in right-profile relief, designed by Josef Tutenhayn. This design was the last to feature any Austro-Hungarian emperor on legal coinage in the 19th or 20th century.

The reverse face, designed by Anton Schariff, displays the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s coat of arms with the seal of the Hapsburg Dynasty and a double-headed eagle revealing the shield on its chest. The double-headed eagle represents the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary and has been a popular symbol of European history.
