The Saint Gaudens design is highly regarded as one of the most beautiful coin designs in American history. President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to renovate the gold coin design, so he had renowned artist and engraver Augustus Saint Gaudens create an entirely new design for the Gold Double Eagle.
This version of the Gold Double Eagle was minted from 1907 to 1933 at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints. In 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102, which required all persons to return their gold coins to the Federal Reserve to curtail some of the effects of the Great Depression. This severely decreased the number of gold coins minted before 1933 and made them extremely rare and desirable.
This $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin contains .9675 Troy oz of gold. Every coin is graded in AU (Almost Uncirculated) condition, with only a slight amount of wear on the high points. Each coin will come in protective packaging to ensure quality during the shipping process.
The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty standing in front of the sun’s powerful rays with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. Before 1912, there were only 46 stars around the rim, but with the addition of Arizona and New Mexico as states, the stars were increased to 48.
The reverse includes a stunning bald eagle flying through the sun’s rays. Above the eagle reads “United States of America” and “Twenty Dollars”. Below the eagle reads “In God We Trust”. The latter motto was not included in the original mint in 1907, but after a public outcry, it was changed the next year.
