Description
The Franc was widely used as an international currency in Europe before the expansion of the Euro. The French Franc was the most popular, with other countries, such as Switzerland, tying the value of their Franc to the French Franc. The Franc came to form the backbone of the Latin Monetary Union.
The French Franc was introduced by Napoleon Bonaparte during the First French Empire. After many political changes in France and the establishment of the Third French Republic, the Paris Mint announced the production of the most popular French Franc design, the Marianne Rooster. This Marianne Rooster design was issued between 1899 and 1914. Other popular French Franc designs include the Guardian Angel design, which was struck right before the Marianne Rooster from 1871 to 1898.
Each coin in this listing will ship in protective packaging and will arrive in varied conditions. The coin will also feature a random design from a random year of French Franc mintage. Each coin will have the same amount of gold, containing .1867 oz of .900 fine gold. Every coin will also have a face value of 20 Francs, however, as of 2002, the Franc no longer holds any value in France.Â
The obverse face of the 20 Franc French Gold Coin depends on the mintage year. The 20 Franc Rooster displays an image of Marianne, the female personification of France, designed by JC Chaplain. The 20 Franc Guardian Angel obverse depicts the Guardian Angel, Genius, creating inscriptions on the French Constitution.Â
The reverse of the 20 Franc Rooster features a depiction of the Gallic Rooster, the unofficial symbol of France. The 20 Franc Guardian Angel includes a circular wreath with the face value and mintage date inside.Â
