In the early ballads and tales of Robin Hood, Maid Marian was not consistently portrayed as Robin Hood’s love interest or as a central figure in the adventures.
Instead, she appeared intermittently and was sometimes depicted as a shepherdess or simply as one of the members of Robin Hood’s band. It was only in later adaptations and theatrical performances, particularly during the Tudor and Stuart periods, that the character of Maid Marian evolved into the romantic partner of Robin Hood and a significant figure in the tales.
This coin is struck from .9999 fine silver and features a beautifully detailed design of Maid Marian as she hides and observes in the Sherwood Forest.
Designed by Jody Clark, the reverse side of the coin depicts the right profile effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. The 2023 design beautifully depicts the king facing left.
