The Bavarian Mint is proud to present the highly sought-after 2023 1 oz Somalia Silver Elephant Coin, now available for purchase through GoldClub Direct. This coin is part of the African Wildlife Series Elephant Coin, which was first issued in 1999 as the Zambia Elephant and later rebranded in 2004 for Somalia. The series is renowned for its annual release of new design elements, featuring the African bush elephant. This year’s release marks the 20th issue of the coins in this series as the Somalia Silver Elephant, and the 25th issue of the coins overall.

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Somalia, which is a consistent design throughout the series and depicts a crowned shield supported by leopards with a field of horizontal lines and a single star in the center. On the reverse, the coin features the latest image of the African bush elephant from the Bavarian State Mint. This year’s design focuses on the head of the African bush elephant reaching for foliage in a tree.

The Bavarian State Mint, also known as the Münze Bayern, has a long and storied history dating back to 1158. Founded during the reign of Emperor Friedrich I, the mint was initially located in the city of Munich and was responsible for producing coins for the Bavarian duchy. Over the centuries, the mint has undergone several relocations and changes in ownership, but it has always remained an important institution in Bavaria.

Throughout its history, the Bavarian State Mint has been known for its high-quality coin production and its use of advanced technology. In the 19th century, the mint adopted the use of steam-powered coin presses, which greatly increased the efficiency and precision of coin production. In the 20th century, the mint continued to innovate, adopting computer-controlled engraving and striking machines. In addition to producing coins for circulation, the Bavarian State Mint also produces a wide range of commemorative and collector coins, many of which are highly sought after by numismatists. The mint is also responsible for the production of medals, seals, and other official documents for the Bavarian government.

The Bavarian State Mint is considered one of the leading mints in the world and its coins are known for their exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
