The Maple Leaf series is one of the most beloved and diverse bullion coin series out there, featuring coins in a variety of weights, including gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. The Royal Canadian Mint is one of the few sovereign mint programs that produce coins in all four major precious metals.

The Gold Maple Leaf was the first in the series, back in 1979, 14 years after its adoption as the national symbol of Canada. The Royal Canadian Mint added platinum and silver varieties in 1988, with the Platinum Maple Leaf available in different weights. However, the program was stopped in 2003 due to a decline in demand for platinum bullion coins. In 2009, the production of Platinum Maple Leafs was restarted, but only in the 1 oz weight.

The 2023 1 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf is made of .9995 pure platinum and comes in Brilliant Uncirculated Condition, shipped individually in protective plastic flips or in multiples of 10 in protective tubes. These coins are considered legal tender in Canada, with a face value of $50 (CAD).

On the obverse face of the Platinum Maple Leaf, you’ll find an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in right profile relief, wearing a pearl necklace and earrings. The 2023 coin uses the fourth-generation portrait, designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003, which is the first portrait during the Queen’s reign without a crown.

On the reverse, you’ll see the national emblem of Canada and the namesake of this coin, the sugar maple leaf. All versions of the Maple Leaf series have featured the maple leaf on the reverse. To add an extra layer of security, the reverse includes a micro-laser engraved privy mark of a maple leaf to authenticate the coin.
