The American Gold Buffalo is the newest annual coin series from the US Mint, being released in 2006, 20 years after the release of the American Gold Eagle series. Gold Eagles are 22-karat (91.67% pure) gold, so the US Mint needed to compete with other Mints’ 24-karat gold bullion programs. The American Buffalo became the highest-purity coin ever produced by the United States Mint and is now a staple investment for investors around the world.  

The 1 oz American Gold Buffalo has a face value of $50, guaranteed by the US federal government. The coin will ship in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, packaged in an individual plastic flip, a protective tube of 20 coins, or a monster box of 500 coins. 

The design of the Gold Buffalo has remained the same since its introduction. The coin uses the design popularized on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel by James Earle Fraser. On the reverse face, a Native American leader is seen in right-profile relief. Fraser was said to have taken features from various real-life indigenous elders to create the portrait. 

The reverse shows a large American buffalo in left-profile relief. The portrait was modeled by Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo. Surrounding the bison are the United States mottos and the specifications of the coin.
