The 2023 ¼ oz British Gold Britannia, boasting the inaugural edition effigy of His Majesty, King Charles III, has been officially unveiled by the Royal Mint. This marks a new chapter in British coinage, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. This coin is sure to be highly coveted, as it holds immense historical significance in the annals of British coinage.
The Gold Britannia series has been in circulation for 37 years, and until now, every coin has featured Queen Elizabeth II. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of British heritage and be one of the first to possess a Britannia coin bearing the image of King Charles III.
Each coin is comprised of ¼ troy oz of .9999 pure gold in BU condition. The ¼ oz Gold Britannia is considered legal tender with a face value of 25 pounds. Your order will be dispatched in individual protective flips or tubes of 25 coins.
The obverse of the 2023 ¼ oz British Gold Britannia coin displays the first coinage portrait of King Charles III, expertly crafted by Martin Jennings in left-profile relief and depicting the King without a crown. A short release of 2023 Britannias featured Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, while Martin Jennings created the bust.
The reverse bears a modern depiction of Britannia, as originally designed in 1987 by Philip Nathan. This figure has represented Britain for centuries and is instantly recognizable worldwide. Britannia is depicted standing tall on a rock, holding a trident in her right hand and a Union Jack shield and an olive branch in her left.
Furthermore, the Britannia coin also includes four advanced security elements to make it one of the most visually secure coins in the world. These features are a moving wave texture in the reverse background, a latent security image of a padlock, tincture lines on the shield, and micro-text engraving.
