Description
The only annually issued 24-karat US gold coin, the American Gold Buffalo, is now available directly from GoldClub Direct.
Before the American Buffalo was introduced, most US gold coins had a lower purity than other countries’ bullion programs. Up until 1834, the US Mint did produce 22-karat gold for circulation, however, they lowered the purity to align better with the face value.
In 1986, the US Mint started the American Gold Eagle program, which, like the gold before 1834, was 22-karat. However, many countries had 24-karat gold (.9999 pure), so finally, in 2006, the US Mint released the American Buffalo, the highest-purity gold coin in the history of the US Mint.
The design of the American Gold Buffalo does not change year to year. The obverse face features a stoic Native American in right-profile relief first designed and popularized by James Earl Fraser in 1913 on the 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. Also included on the obverse are the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “2022.”
The reverse face portrays a mighty American Buffalo. Fraser took inspiration from a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City named Black Diamond. Surrounding the buffalo are inscriptions of the specifications of the coin.
The 2022 1 oz American Buffalo Coin contains 1 oz of pure gold with a purity of .9999. The coin ships in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and will arrive in individual protective flips, or in a plastic tube of 20 coins.
