Description
Introducing the 2022 1/10 oz Reverse Proof Iberian Lynx Royal Spanish Mint Gold Coin, a piece that embodies the majesty and grace of the elusive Iberian Lynx. Crafted by the skilled artisans at the Royal Spanish Mint, this coin is a true masterpiece of numismatic art.
At the heart of this coin lies the Iberian Lynx, a beautiful feline native to the Iberian Peninsula. With its distinctive tufted ears and spotted coat, the lynx is a symbol of the natural beauty and diversity of this region. The Iberian Lynx is that it is the most endangered wild cat species in the world. In the 20th century, their population declined drastically due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and hunting. At one point, it was estimated that there were only about 100 individuals left in the wild. However, thanks to conservation efforts and reintroduction programs, the population has slowly started to recover, and there are now believed to be over 400 individuals in the wild.
The reverse design features a stunning depiction of the lynx head & facial features in intricate detail. Rendered in exquisite reverse proof finish to create a striking contrast against the gleaming background, in addition to the inscriptions “Lince Iberico”, 2022, 15 Euro Cent.
The obverse of the 2022 1/10 oz Reverse Proof Iberian Lynx Royal Spanish Mint Gold Coin features the Spanish artistic representation of the ‘Pillars of Hercules’. The Pillars of Hercules are a pair of rock formations that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The southern pillar is the Jebel Musa mountain, in Morocco, and is also known as the “Mount of Moses”. The northern pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar, a 426-meter-high limestone ridge located on the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, and, although the rock is a British Overseas Territory, it is located on the southern coast of Spain, and Spain has long claimed sovereignty over it. In fact, the Spanish name for the Rock is “PeĂ±Ă³n de Gibraltar”, which means “Rock of Gibraltar”, and the Spanish flag is often flown by Spanish activists on the Rock as a symbol of their claim. Despite the ongoing dispute, Gibraltar remains an important strategic and economic location for the UK. According to ancient Greek mythology, the pillars were created by the hero Hercules to mark the edge of the known world. Inscribed on the coin depicted pillars are the words PLUS ULTRA, which is Spain’s official motto and translates to Further Beyond. Between these ancient pillars are a pair of crowned globes, which represent the meeting of two hemispheres. Inscriptions read Felipe Vi Rey De Espana, 1/10 Onza 999.9 Oro.
