The 2021 1 oz American Gold Eagle Type 2 features an all-new design and is now available to purchase from GoldClub Direct.
The Gold Eagle series is one of the most popular gold bullion coin series worldwide. The series was originally introduced in 1986 in bullion and proof versions. In 1987 and 1988, the US Mint grew the series by producing Proof Gold Eagles in three more fractional-ounce weights, 1/10, 1/4, and 1/2.
In 2021, the Gold Eagle received its first major design refresh, updating security features and revealing a completely new reverse design. The refresh happened halfway through the year, so there are both type 1 and type 2 Gold Eagles with a mintage date of 2021. The 2021 Gold Eagle now contains an anti-counterfeit reeded edge, making it harder to replicate this coin. The original reverse design featured a family of bald eagles by Miley Busiek. The obverse face remains the same.
All 2021 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins contain exactly 1 oz of .9167 pure gold. The US mint made the coins weigh 1.0909 oz to adjust to the 91.67% purity and ensure the coin still contains 1 oz of pure gold. The 1 oz Gold Eagle has a face value of $50, backed by the United States government. It is not intended for circulation as the intrinsic value of the coin is much higher. This product will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and ships in individual plastic flips, tubes of 20 coins, or monster boxes of 500 coins.
The obverse face of the type 2 Gold Eagle uses the same design popularized on the historic 1907 Augustus Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece. Lady Liberty stands atop a rock with an olive branch in her left hand and a flaming torch in her right hand.
The newly-designed reverse features an up-close portrait of the American Bald Eagle, by Jennie Norris. Surrounding the focused bald eagle are inscriptions of United States mottos and the specifications of the coin.
