American Gold Eagles were first introduced in 1986 in both bullion and proof varieties. Although the bullion coin was available in fractional-ounce coins, the Proof Gold Eagle was originally only offered in one-ounce coins. The program expanded in 1987 to include a 1/2 oz coin and introduced the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988. In 2006, the American Gold Eagle program released a 1 oz burnished coin to the series.
Each 1 oz American Gold Eagle from this listing is available in proof condition and will arrive inside a protective capsule. You may also receive the coin in a slab certified by a third-party grading service. 1 oz American Gold Eagles contain 1 Troy oz of .9167 (22-karat) pure gold. This coin is also considered legal tender, with a face value of $50. The mintage date you receive is random and is based on our inventory. Buying multiple coins may result in some coins from the same year of issue.
In 2021, the US Mint updated the design of the American Gold Eagle for the first time. You may receive either design when ordering this product. The obverse of pre-2021 and post-2021 Gold Eagles remained the same, other than small modernization details. The new Gold Eagle reverse was designed by Jennie Norris and features a detailed, left-profile portrait of an American bald eagle.
The obverse face of the American Gold Eagle uses the design popularized by Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907. It features Lady Liberty standing atop a rock with a lit torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. The design symbolizes strength and peace.
The original reverse was designed by Miley Busiek in 1986 for the introduction of the American Gold Eagle. The image depicts a family of bald eagles. The male eagle is flying over the nest while the mother eagle is protecting her eaglets.
