Description
The American Gold Eagle is the crown jewel of gold coins. Produced by the US Mint, this coin quickly grew to the top of the totem pole, garnering international popularity as soon as it was released. First issued in 1986, the American Gold Eagle now has 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 oz varieties available in bullion, proof, and burnished conditions. The 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle was introduced in 1988.
1/4 oz American Gold Eagles have a face value of $10, legally backed by the United States Government. Since the coin contains 1/4 oz of gold, the true value of the coin is higher and should not be used for circulation. The American Eagle coin is a 22-karat gold coin (91.67% gold). The remaining contents of the coin are composed of copper and silver. With a .9167 purity, the US Mint made the total weight of the coin higher than 1/4 Troy oz, which allows the coin to contain exactly 1/4 Troy oz of pure gold.

In 2021, the design was updated for the first time since its release. Along with a completely new reverse design by Jennie Norris, an ant-counterfeit reeded edge variation was added. This listing is for either pre-2021 or post-2021 American Gold Eagles, and GoldClub Direct cannot guarantee which version you receive.
The obverse shows a modern adaptation of the 1907 Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original $20 gold piece design. Lady Liberty is seen standing atop a rock, holding a burning torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
The original reverse for the American Gold Eagle was designed by Miley Busiek. The design features a bald eagle carrying an olive branch to its nest, where a mother bald eagle is protecting two of her eaglets. This design represents peace and the importance of family.
