Description
The 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is an affordable option for investors looking to get into gold. The Maple Leaf has long been atop the international rankings for most popular gold bullion coins.Â
The series was initially released in 1979 in a one-ounce weight, becoming the first coin to challenge the South African Krugerrand. The popularity of this release led the Royal Canadian Mint to introduce the 1/2 oz variation in 1986. This release was part of the second expansion in the program. In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint released the maple leaf in 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins. The mint further expanded the program with a 1/20 oz coin in 1993 and a 1-gram coin in 2014. The Royal Canadian Mint’s large facilities and advanced machines allow them to create many different-sized, high-quality products.

The obverse of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. There have been three effigies of the Queen since this series started, and will depend on the year of issue you receive. The first portrait depicts the Queen at age 39 and is featured on coins from 1986-1989. The second effigy displays a 64-year-old Queen from 1990 to 2002. The Queen at age 79 is portrayed on all coins from 2003 to the present.
The reverse face of the maple leaf has remained the same since it was released in 1986. A sugar maple leaf, the national emblem of Canada, is centered, with the specifications of the coin engraved around the rim.
